Where the water rises: four springs
A spring is simply the place where groundwater meets daylight. Rain falls on the upper slopes, soaks into the soil and the fractured rock beneath, travels downhill underground, and finally surfaces where the land opens it up — at the foot of a slope, along a seam in the rock, in a green hollow where the ground stays wet all year. Four of those points sit on the reserve, and each one is the true head of the water system here. Not the streams, not the falls below: the springs. Everything downstream is just this same water on its way to the sea.
The four springs rise high on the property, up in the forested ground where the trees are oldest and the slope is steepest. That location is not an accident, and it is not luck. Springs form where there is a reliable supply of clean groundwater and a healthy soil to hold and release it, and both of those depend on the forest above. The canopy breaks the force of the rain; the leaf litter and root mat act like a sponge; the deep, living soil stores the water and lets it down slowly. Mountain streams like these have a particular character. High up, near the springs, they are narrow, cold, and clear, running fast over stone with short pools and little riffles where the water breaks white. Why forested watersheds make clean water
It is worth being clear about why the water here is as good as it is, because the reason is not a filtration plant or a treatment system. The reason is the forest. A forested watershed is a water-purification system that runs on sunlight and needs no maintenance beyond being left alone, and understanding how it works is the key to understanding why the reserve is run the way it is.
Start with the rain. In an open, cleared landscape, heavy rain hits bare ground, picks up soil and whatever is on it, and runs off fast and dirty, carving gullies and carrying sediment straight into the nearest channel. The same water grows the bananas. The reserve's fifteen-acre organic banana farm — worked on this ground for roughly three hundred years — sits on the lower slopes, downstream of the springs, and it is farmed with the water source firmly in mind. The streams and the Sete Quedas below
The reserve sits roughly two miles above the Sete Quedas — the "Seven Waterfalls" — and that vertical relationship is the heart of the whole place. Seasonal flow: how the water changes through the year
The Serra do Mar is one of the wettest coastal mountain ranges in Brazil, and the water here moves to the rhythm of that climate. Understanding the seasons is the key to knowing what you will find — a thundering, full-throated system or a gentler, clearer one — and both versions are worth seeing.
The wet season
The warmer months, roughly from late spring through summer, are the wet season on this coast. This is when the mountain earns its reputation: afternoon storms build over the Serra, the forest drips for days, and the streams run full and loud. The springs flush, the falls thicken, and the whole water system is at its most powerful. It is a spectacular time to be here for the sheer force of the water, but it is also the time to respect it most. The drier season
The cooler, drier months, roughly through the middle of the year, bring the water down to its gentler self. Read the water before you get in
Mountain streams respond quickly to rain that may have fallen higher up, out of sight. Before swimming, look at the water: clear and calm is good; rising, browning, or pushing hard means wait. If it rained hard overnight or upstream, give the streams a few hours to settle. Aquatic life: what lives in clean, cold water
Clear, cold, well-oxygenated mountain water is a demanding place to live, and the creatures that thrive in it are a good sign that the water is healthy. Many of them are small and easy to miss, but once you start looking into the pools and under the stones, the streams turn out to be as full of life as the forest around them.
In the water
The streams hold small fish suited to fast, clean water — slim characins that hang in the current, and armored and pencil catfishes that graze the stones and tuck under rocks in the riffles. In the calmer pools you can often see freshwater shrimp working the bottom, and along the edges the streams support crabs, snails, and the larvae of dragonflies and damselflies waiting out their underwater youth before they emerge to fly. Some of the most useful residents are the ones no one comes to see. Along the banks
The life of the water spills onto its edges. Torrent-loving frogs call from the wet rocks beside the fast water, and at night the delicate glass frogs and tree frogs of the Mata Atlantica sing from the streamside vegetation. Hummingbirds work the flowers along the banks; kingfishers and other water-minded birds patrol the pools; and dragonflies hang and dart over the open water all day. Safe swimming spots
Swimming in cold, clean mountain water is one of the real pleasures of the reserve, and it can be done safely and simply if you approach it with a little care. The streams have carved a number of pools as they drop, and some are far better suited to a swim than others.
What makes a pool good
The best swimming pools are the calm, deep, rock-rimmed basins that form where a stream drops into a hollow and then slows — clear enough to see the bottom, deep enough to float, and out of the direct force of any chute or fall. These are the pools to seek. What you avoid is easy to name: the base of a falling chute, where the water pushes down hard and unpredictably; narrow, fast channels where the current can pin you against rock; and any pool immediately after heavy rain, when the whole system is up and pushing. Swimming well and lightly
A few simple habits keep both you and the water safe. Get in at the calm pools, not below the drops. Check the water before you commit — clear and calm, not rising or brown. Mind that mountain water is genuinely cold, which is part of the joy but also something to enter gradually rather than leap into. Never swim alone in moving water, and keep an eye on children near any current. And leave the pool as you found it: no soap, no sunscreen slicks, no litter, because you are swimming in the same water the chalets and farm drink from and the same water that becomes the falls below. The cold is the point
The water in these streams has come out of the ground and run down through shaded forest, so it stays cold even on a hot day. Stewardship of the source
None of what is on this page happens by default. Clean springs, living streams, swimmable pools, and healthy falls are the result of decisions — mostly decisions to leave things alone, and a few decisions to actively protect them. Riparian buffers
The single most important tool for protecting a stream is the strip of forest along its banks — the riparian buffer. And the whole property is capped at a maximum of twenty-five chalets across fifty acres, one per two acres, which keeps the human footprint permanently small relative to the forest and the water. The source is the whole point
Put together, these practices add up to a simple philosophy: protect the source, and the rest of the system takes care of itself. You do not need to treat water you never dirtied. You do not need to engineer flow that the forest already regulates. You do not need to restore a stream you never degraded. Water in a threatened forest
It is easy to take clean mountain water for granted until you know how rare the conditions that produce it have become.
